Steam Deck user builds floppy disk game collection

A Steam Deck user has found a practical use for floppy disks in 2026, provided that practical means adding several extra steps before launching a game. The Decky Links plugin allows Steam and non-Steam games to start when the user inserts a configured floppy disk.
The disk does not contain the game. Instead, it stores a small Steam URL such as “steam://run/1174180”, which tells the handheld to launch Red Dead Redemption 2 from its internal storage or microSD card. This is fortunate because a standard floppy disk holds 1.44MB, slightly below the game’s storage requirements.
Decky Links also supports USB drives, QR codes and NFC tags. The developer says NFC tags are detected fastest, while floppy disks preserve the full period-correct experience by taking longer and making mechanical noises.
Users can pair each physical item with a game directly through the plugin. Removing the disk can also close the running game, turning the setup into something close to a physical cartridge system, except that the cartridge contains one line of text and none of the software.
