Wo Long 2: Wings Of Ember was among the many surprise reveals of the non-E3 season, and although the announcement trailer did not show much, it looked clear from the get-go that the new entry in the series would address many of the complaints of the first entry in the series. Ahead of its early 2027 launch on PC , PlayStation 5 , Xbox Series X|S , and Nintendo Switch , Team NINJA and Koei Tecmo revealed that the new entry in the series is going open-world with a dynamic battlefield that will address the monotonous feel that many open-world games have, while taking a few more pages from the Ninja Gaiden series book.
Speaking with AUTOMATON China at ChinaJoy 2026 , producer Masakazu Hirayama confirmed Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember will do away with the linear progression of the original game in favor of open-world progression with a dynamic battlefield whose conditions will change dynamically. This change for progression will also influence how the original's Morale system worked, although Hirayama-san did not provide specifics.
"In the previous game, players needed to plant flags in various locations to boost morale in order to challenge the boss. This time, with the open world setting, the morale system will indeed be adjusted to reflect this change. Specific details cannot be revealed at this time; we can only say that the morale system still exists, but it will be different from before," Hirayama-san said. "Regarding the monotony of open-world exploration, this time it basically depicts an entire battlefield. Changes on the battlefield will affect the outcome of the battle, causing changes in other parts of the scene as well. I think this will alleviate the monotony to some extent."
Looking at how the original tried to seamlessly connect the linear story missions and how Team NINJA sort of already went into an open-world direction with Nioh 3 's open areas , Wo-Long 2: Wings of Ember doing something similar isn't surprising. Hopefully, the implementation of these mechanics will be as good as it is in the third entry in the series, as it elevated the experience more than most expected, myself included.
Taking a Page From The Ninja Gaiden 4 Book
Having also served as the director of Ninja Gaiden 4 , whose development overlapped with Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember's , Masakazu Hirayama also brought some of the game's elements into the upcoming title. "If I had to say whether Wo Long 2 borrowed anything from Ninja Gaiden 4, I think it would mainly be the more three-dimensional action elements like wall-running and scaling. Including the movements and camera angles, we definitely utilized our years of accumulated experience," Hirayama-san said.
Though not explicitly described as inspired by the Ninja Gaiden series, it's very likely that the classic character action game series did influence Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember' s aerial combat mechanics. While they will be a core part of the experience, aerial combat mechanics won't steal the show, as no weapon has been balanced primarily for aerial combat . According to Hirayama-san, there will be "weapon skills and tactics to counter aerial combat," but players will still have plenty of flexibility.
The Ninja Gaiden series likely influenced the decision to downplay the importance of Deflection (the core mechanic upon which the original was built, as Team NINJA president Fumihiko Yasuda told me back in 2022 ), which led to passive playstyles in the original Wo Long . "We have added Phoenix Power, also known as the Concentration System, to give players more options and allow them to have more proactive moves in addition to parrying," Hirayama-san said.
While the Wo Long 2: Wings Of Ember producer didn't get into specifics, the new information above paints an exciting picture for a game that most never expected would see the light of day. As the original Wo Long was significantly improved after launch, it will be very interesting to see how much the open-world dynamic battlefield and the Deflection changes will build on the original to deliver a better game.
