Noctua Says Vendor Cooler-Clearance Specs Can’t Be Trusted, So It Hand-Measured Over A Hundred PC Cases

This is one of the most handy databases that lets you know if you can fit even larger CPU coolers in your PC case.

The traditional way to find out whether a CPU cooler will fit inside a particular case or not is to check the official specifications on the product page. Almost every vendor lists the CPU cooler clearance for its PC cases on the specs page, alongside VGA and PSU clearance as well. This is handy when you are shopping for a beefy CPU air cooler that could create a problem during installation.

In some cases, the air cooler might press against the side panel even though the listed specifications show sufficient clearance. Therefore, you cannot always rely on the official data from the manufacturer, and it's always safer to go with a slightly smaller cooler that gives you a few millimeters before it touches the side panel. However, in some cases, you can actually fit a larger air cooler, but there is no way of knowing this except when you are actually building a PC.

To tackle this problem, Noctua has built a database that will now help users know the actual clearance for the CPU coolers. The company has made a database comprising over a hundred PC cases from different case vendors. After measuring the CPU clearance manually in those cases, the company has made dedicated tables for each case, showing which cooler can fit and which cannot.

Noctua gave examples of a few cases that can actually fit taller coolers, as their clearance is noticeably higher than the listed specifications. This includes popular cases like Corsair 4000D, 5000D, and 5000D, where one can have nearly 10 mm additional clearance to accommodate a cooler like NH-D15 G2, which measures 168 mm, leaving ample space on the side.

A table lists cooler models compatible with the 'ASUS Prime AP201' and their cooler heights, with all marked as compatible up to 168.3 mm.

On the other side, the company has also found a few cases where the clearance is actually lower than mentioned. This includes PC cases like ASUS Prime AP201, where the actual clearance is around 2 mm lower than mentioned. Keep in mind that this database only shows you the compatible Noctua coolers for individual PC cases, but this should also help you know whether Non-Noctua coolers can fit as well.

Noctua says it will keep expanding the database with more cases as they manually measure the clearance in more PC cases.
