The campaign introduces a looping level structure where actions taken in the present can change areas visited later. Players can also collect runes that unlock previously inaccessible routes, encounters and secrets.

MachineGames has also added persistent health and ammunition upgrades. These remain available as players progress through the episode, adding another progression system on top of Quake’s original mechanics.

This is not MachineGames’ first work on Quake. The studio previously developed new episodes for Bethesda’s modern re-releases of the game, including Dimension of the Past and Dimension of the Machine .

Dawn of the Machine is available now as a free update for the modern Quake release on Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch .

The original Quake launched in June 1996, making 2026 its 30th anniversary year. The latest campaign extends a game that has continued receiving official content decades after its release.
