T-Mobile’s CEO Dismisses Elon Musk’s Starlink Threat As “Exaggerated,” Says SpaceX’s Entry In The Carrier Business Serves No Purpose

T-Mobile's CEO has chosen to be dismissive of SpaceX's recent braggadocio, terming the threat posed by Elon Musk's cellular ambitions as "exaggerated" and lacking any particularly strong utility in solving consumer-centric problems.

And yet, this seemingly cavalier attitude on the part of T-Mobile might belie its hidden fears. After all, SpaceX possesses a wide array of strategic assets, including well-endowed coffers, a vast constellation of satellites, and Elon Musk's relentless ambition serving as a potent driving force.

As we detailed recently, SpaceX sent shockwaves through the wider US telecommunication industry at its first earnings call as a public company earlier this week, when it declared that it was exploring the creation of small, low-power femtocell-type cellular base stations on existing Starlink dishes to avoid the massive upfront CapEx required for building cell towers and acquiring the appropriate terrestrial spectrum.

Well, the CEO of T-Mobile has just dismissed SpaceX's determination to enter the carrier landscape by hook or by crook, terming the overall threat to the so-called Big Three - AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile - as "exaggerated," going on to note:

"The threat posed to mobile operators from satellite companies such as Starlink has been exaggerated and I struggle to see which consumer problems they would solve by entering the market."

As we've noted repeatedly, SpaceX currently does not have terrestrial spectrum in sufficient quantities to start a dedicated cellular service. Of course, the company did recently acquire around 65 MHz of nationwide, exclusive-use, contiguous spectrum for $19.6 billion , divided into three distinct bands:

  1. Around 15 MHz of unpaired nationwide Advanced Wireless Services-3 or AWS-3 spectrum band, which is already used by major carriers (like AT&T and Verizon) for their LTE/5G networks. This band is also supported by most premium and mid-range smartphones.
  2. Around 40 MHz of nationwide AWS-4 spectrum, with this band's propagation physics characteristics considered ideal for space-to-ground communication. However, it's not as widely supported by existing cellphones.
  3. Around 10 MHz of nationwide H-Block spectrum, which provides up to 20 times the data throughput compared to the low-band frequencies SpaceX previously leased from T-Mobile, but again remains unsupported by most existing cellphones.

Here's the rub, however. Apart from the relatively limited AWS-3, the bulk of SpaceX's existing terrestrial spectrum is not supported by most current cellphones (AWS-4 and H-Block). And, with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile refusing to enter into an MVNO with SpaceX, Elon Musk's space enterprise only has two options: either buy an existing carrier - with speculation already mounting for a possible acquisition of T-Mobile - or painstakingly try to acquire enough terrestrial spectrum, such as via the FCC's upcoming auction of 160 MHz of the prized upper C-band spectrum .

In the interim, SpaceX has floated the use of Starlink dishes as makeshift cellular base stations. Even so, the spectrum conundrum persists, especially as the satellite-geared spectrum that Starlink already has in vast quantities can't effectively penetrate walls in urban settings.

Even so, T-Mobile's CEO should not so easily dismiss Elon Musk's determination to dominate the US telecom industry. After all, the mega-billionaire has plenty of creativity, and the coffers to back the wildest of gambits.
