Intel HDMI 2.1 FRL Linux support returns for Meteor Lake and newer CPUs

Intel has submitted a new set of Linux driver patches adding HDMI 2.1 Fixed Rate Link support for Meteor Lake and newer processors. The series contains 44 patches and marks the return of work Intel originally started several years ago.

FRL increases the available HDMI bandwidth beyond the limits of the older TMDS signaling method. Intel says the current implementation already works with modes such as 4K at 120Hz . Testing has so far been limited to Meteor Lake and Panther Lake systems.

Intel still needs DSC for higher resolutions

The implementation remains a work in progress. Display Stream Compression is not yet supported over FRL , which means higher-bandwidth modes such as 8K are still unavailable. Intel says DSC work is ongoing while the current patch series focuses on getting the core FRL design reviewed and merged.

Intel actually worked on native HDMI 2.1 FRL support for Linux back in 2022. Those patches never reached the mainline driver and development appeared to stop. The new series therefore brings back work that has been dormant for almost four years.

AMD HDMI 2.1 work already reached Steam Machine

The timing follows major HDMI changes on the AMD side. AMD recently added initial HDMI 2.1 FRL support to its open-source AMDGPU Linux driver, with the first code merged for Linux 7.2. AMD has also been working on DSC, HDMI Forum VRR and ALLM support.

This work directly affected Valve’s Steam Machine , which uses an AMD GPU and SteamOS. Valve previously listed the system as HDMI 2.0 because its Linux software stack could not use the full capabilities of the HDMI interface. Valve later confirmed HDMI 2.1 VRR support in its current software stack, while FRL and DSC work enables higher-bandwidth modes beyond the previous HDMI limitations. The Steam Machine currently supports 4K 120Hz output, with further FRL work intended to expand support for higher refresh rates.

Intel’s patches have not been merged yet. The developers are first seeking review of the basic implementation, with broader hardware testing and DSC support still required before the feature is considered complete.
