AMD FSR 4.1 is 7-10% slower than FSR 3.1 on Radeon RX 7800 XT

ComputerBase has retested the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7600 with FSR Upscaling 4.1, giving us a direct comparison against FSR 3.1 on RDNA 3. The newer upscaler improves image quality, but it also carries a measurable performance cost. ComputerBase previously used FSR 3.1 for RX 7000 cards in its current GPU test suite.
At 2560×1440 in rasterized games, the RX 7800 XT drops from 70.7 FPS with FSR 3.1 to 66.1 FPS with FSR 4.1. The RX 7600 falls from 36.5 to 33.1 FPS. ComputerBase calculates the losses at around 7% and 9%, respectively. The RX 7600 can also run into its 8GB VRAM limit because FSR 4.1 uses slightly more memory.
© ComputerBase The performance gap grows with resolution on the RX 7800 XT. At 3440×1440, average raster performance drops from 59.4 to 54.8 FPS, around 8%. At 4K , it falls from 43.4 to 39.2 FPS, which is roughly a 10% reduction. ComputerBase also found that the performance penalty varies heavily between games, ranging from only 2% in some titles to 18% in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
© ComputerBase ComputerBase says FSR 4.1 produces a much cleaner result than FSR 3.1 on RDNA 3. According to the outlet, FSR 4.1 Performance mode can still look better than FSR 3.1 Quality mode while offering slightly higher performance in that comparison. This gives RX 7000 users the option to use a more aggressive upscaling preset without falling back to FSR 3.1.
For RX 7800 XT owners, the average performance cost is therefore around 7% at 1440p and reaches about 10% at 4K. The RX 7600 loses around 9% at 1440p, with its 8GB memory becoming another limitation in some games. FSR 4.1 is slower than FSR 3.1 on RDNA 3, but ComputerBase’s testing suggests the image-quality improvement is large enough to justify the extra GPU cost.
