Square Enix Keeps Its Forecast Frozen, Yet Final Fantasy VII Revelation Could Still Launch Before March 31, 2027

Last month, Square Enix confirmed during the annual Summer Game Fest showcase that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will release sometime in Spring 2027 on PC , PlayStation 5 , Xbox Series X|S , and Nintendo Switch 2 . While every fan of the series wishes it would release as soon as possible, Square Enix 's forecasts for the current fiscal year ending on March 31, 2027 suggest that the third entry in the series will only release from April onward.

Despite the financial report for Q1 not inspiring much confidence for a March launch date, the possibility is remains given how the publisher handled the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth , which has driven sales and profits in the past quarter with its Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 release.

In its report published today, Square Enix reported strong net sales, +32.3% over last year's first quarter, an +88.6% increase in Operating Income , and a +172.4% jump in Ordinary Income . These results were driven not only by catalog sales, but by the Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the release of the HD-2D action RPG The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales (which was so good that a shareholder interrupted the annual shareholder meeting to praise it ).

“New releases such as the multiplatform launches of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows, as well as Adventurer Elliot’s Thousand-Year Tale, performed solidly,” the report reads. “Combined with steady growth in catalog sales, the sub-segment saw increases in both net sales and operating profit year-over-year.”

For those interested in Square Enix 's next year release schedule, the Full Year forecast remains the most important part of any current fiscal year financial report. The Q2 report doesn't introduce any significant change over the previous one , as the publisher expects ¥298,000 million , a 0.1% increase over the last fiscal year. This heavily suggests that Final Fantasy VII Revelation , which is set to sell significantly with its simultaneous multiplatform release, will not be out by March 31, 2027 .

However, an unchanged forecast at this stage does not definitively rule out a March 2027 launch. Under Japanese accounting standards ( J-GAAP ), Square Enix typically refrains from adjusting its full-year earnings guidance until a release date is officially announced and pre-order tracking provides a concrete forecast.

As seen previously with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth , Square Enix kept its financial projections static until the exact February 29 launch date was finalized. Since the announced Spring 2027 window sits between the end of FY2027 and the start of FY2028 , a release between March 20 and March 31 would allow launch sales to fall into the current fiscal year. If that happens, Square Enix could still issue an upward revision to its forecast in a subsequent financial report, such as Q3 results , once a release date is locked in.

As a new Final Fantasy VII Revelation showcase is set for Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25 , which we will attend as usual, and with Tokyo Game Show next month, there's a very good chance it won't be long until we finally learn exactly when we will be able to experience the game's massive scale , the further perfecting of Rebirth 's combat system , and the FITS system , among many other things.
