Persona 4 Revival Producer Wants Atlus To Remake The First Two Games, But The Original Design Makes It A Nightmare

Persona 4 Revival continues Atlus ' remaking endeavors following 2024's Persona 3 Reload , but it seems like the Japanese company is already thinking about what's next for the popular JRPG series following the release of this new remake and Persona 6 on PC , PlayStation 5 , Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S . With Persona 5 being a modern game in no need of an immediate remake, Atlus could be looking at the series' past, but remaking the first two entries in the series will be a significant challenge due to the original games themselves.

Speaking with GamerBraves , Persona 4 Revival producer Wada Kazuhisa commented on the possibility of remaking the first two entries in the Persona series. "At this point, I can’t say for sure, but personally, I think it’s something we should definitely do. I think we have to do it," Kazuhisa-san said.

As Atlus is hard at work on two games, it's not surprising that the Persona 4 Revival producer did not provide any specifics, other than what sounds like a strong intention to revisit the first two entries in the series. However, as a long-time fan of the series who has been there since the beginning, I believe remaking these two games will be Atlus ' biggest challenge to date.

For starters, neither the original Persona nor Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment includes the social gameplay introduced in Persona 3 , which h as significantly contributed to the series' current popularity. Although the high-school setting is still present, though not in Eternal Punishment due to a specific story twist , all three games would require some serious reworking to fit the one element that has become synonymous with the franchise.

Gameplay would likely require some reworking as well. While the dungeon-crawling aspect is still present in all three games, the combat systems were very much different, especially in the first Persona , whose combat system featured plenty of tactical RPG elements with an emphasis on positioning . The Persona system also worked significantly differently and would require reworking.

Despite how challenging rebuilding the first entries in the Persona series would be, I would love to see them being made after Atlus is done with Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6 , especially the Persona 2 games, which I believe are still some of the finest JRPGs ever made. Hopefully, Atlus will not shy away from this challenge and deliver an excellent modern take on these darker narratives and their unique mechanics, including the Rumors system in the Persona 2 games that allowed players to change reality in a rather clever way
