High-End Android Smartphone With 24GB RAM Turns Into Fully-Functional PC With Dual-CPU Cooler Mod And Transparent Case; Can Run Witcher 3 At 1080p Ultra Settings

Adequate cooling and the ability to employ software can transform any capable Android smartphone into a fully-fledged PC. One modder in possession of the ZTE Nubia Z70 Ultra utilized two CPU coolers, a custom acrylic case, and a power bank to ensure that performance remains consistent enough to run Witcher 3 at 1080p resolution while keeping the visual settings at Ultra.

Despite the Nubia Z70 Ultra not featuring Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 , the Snapdragon 8 Elite has sufficient processing juice to turn into a makeshift PC, thanks to its octa-core configuration and maximum clock speed of 4.32GHz. Redditor “ntsow” previously showcased the exact same smartphone featuring a dual-CPU cooler modification that took its performance stability to new heights when running stress tests like the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test.

This was only the first phase, as breaking benchmark records wasn’t the Redditor’s priority; rather, it was to see whether the Nubia Z70 Ultra’s sustained performance could be leveraged to turn the smartphone into a workable PC. It turns out that it can, because when fitted in a case, the Redditor managed to get native Termux and the XFCE4 version of Linux running directly on the Android device. He also managed to get some Windows gaming sessions running to see how the Nubia Z70 Ultra would hold up.

In a nutshell, its performance was quite impressive, with the actively cooled Snapdragon 8 Elite and 24GB of RAM able to run the Witcher 3 at 1080p resolution, with the visual settings set to Ultra. The framerate was hovering between 20FPS and 30FPS, with the Adreno GPU sitting at 99 percent utilization. The handset managed to connect to an external monitor while sporting keyboard and mouse support to help bring PC-level functionality to the table.

The software side still needs a little bit of polishing, but ntsow has shown that it’s entirely possible to get an Android smartphone to do more than be limited to its own operating system, just as long as there’s enough cooling and proper motivation to bring about this transition.
