RTX 4090 Owner Tries His Hand At “Rage-Baiting,” Says DLSS “Looks Blurry” While Claiming The RX 9070 XT Is The Superior Option When Enabling Path Tracing

The RTX 5090 overshadowing the RTX 4090 doesn’t diminish the latter’s graphics and AI capabilities, and whoever is running the GPU in their systems should consider themselves extraordinarily lucky during the ongoing DRAM shortage. However, one user who owns NVIDIA’s previous-generation graphics card has likely triggered a firestorm on purpose as he attempts to rage-bait his fellow PC enthusiasts by claiming that the RX 9070 XT is better than the RTX 4090 in path tracing.

Redditor “Lord_Captain_King” has invited the wrath of the PC community in the subreddit r/radeon when he claims that the RTX 4090 doesn’t appear dated in technological terms, but that DLSS looks blurry and NVIDIA’s Frame Generation technology introduces too much lag. He also boasts about the RX 9070 XT’s rasterization efficiency and states that the latter could potentially beat the RTX 4090 in path tracing.

“I've been running an RTX 4090 for a while, but honestly, it’s feeling a bit dated. DLSS looks blurry to me now, frame gen introduces too much lag, and 24GB of VRAM is honestly useless unless you're doing heavy rendering (which I don't). Irrespective of which angle you read these claims from, it’s a laughable claim that the RX 9070 XT is superior to the RTX 4090. Even in pure rasterization, NVIDIA’s older GPU wins by a significant margin, indicating that the Redditor was clearly looking for trouble to emanate in his path. Thanks to NVIDIA’s Tensor and RT cores, the RTX 4090 can deliver far superior upscaling, interpolation, and ray tracing results, all while maintaining a solid framerate.

Assuming that Lord_Captain_King actually believed his own words about DLSS being blurry and Frame Generation introducing a ton of lag, we currently don’t have the complete data. We don’t know what his monitor’s native resolution is, and we don’t know what upscaling resolution is targeted. If you’re rendering a game at 4K and switch to the Ultra Performance mode in DLSS, which upscales from a resolution of 1,280 x 720, you might see some imaging anomalies, but DLSS 4.5 has largely mitigated these issues.

As for Frame Generation, we don’t know what the base framerate was, but if you’ve locked that number to 30FPS and are hoping that some interpolation will magically grant you smoother gameplay, then yes, some input lag is definitely expected.
