FromSoftware Attempted Ray Tracing with Elden Ring, But It Pales in Comparison to Dark Souls 3 with Modded Path Tracing

Although FromSoftware has created some of the best action RPGs of all time, never ceding to the pressure to create more marketable titles , the Japanese studio is not exactly known for pushing the technical boundaries of games. In Elden Ring , the studio led by Hidetaka Miyazaki did try its hand at ray tracing with ray-traced ambient occlusion and shadows, but what it has achieved pales in comparison to the modded path tracing that is coming soon to Dark Souls 3 .

The third entry in the series is getting remastered lighting thanks to modder Ganaboy , who is working on a new version of the DS Lighting Engine mod, which added path tracing to Dark Souls 2 back in April. Although a release date for the new version of the mod has yet to be confirmed, its developer released two work-in-progress videos showcasing the High Wall of Lothric and the Firelink Shrine in path-traced glory.

In addition to sharing the videos above, Ganaboy also shared the system requirements to enjoy Dark Souls 3 with path tracing when it launches. "DS3 Geometry is 10X of DS2, Requirements will be similar to DS2LE, All cards supported for DS2LE will be for DS3 as well. All RTX 2/3 series are supported. You may have to use a slightly higher upscaling. For eg if you used Quality mode in DS2LE. You will probably need to use Balanced for DS3," the modder wrote in the video's description.

Considering how path tracing is generally extremely demanding even in dated games , it's no surprise that upscaling via NVIDIA DLSS will be required to achieve an acceptable level of performance.

With FromSoftware's incredible art direction, Dark Souls 3 with path tracing truly looks stunning, even with some of its current issues, including some sequences that are a little too dark. Hopefully, FromSoftware itself won't wait too long to start implementing path tracing natively in its games, as I believe it would do wonders for enhancing the incredible atmosphere the Japanese developer injects into its hardcore action RPGs.
