Project Sirius Loses 18 Developers, But CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher Multiplayer Game Is Reportedly on a Promising Track

The dream of a The Witcher multiplayer game may have been kept alive by the unofficial The Witcher 3 Online mod , but most fans are still waiting for CD Projekt RED to finish its long-awaited Project Sirius .

That's CD Projekt RED's codename for an experimental multiplayer game set in The Witcher universe, in development by The Molasses Flood , a Boston-based studio acquired by CD Projekt in October 2021 . The project was announced one year later , alongside several other Witcher and Cyberpunk projects.

It's fair to say it hasn't been smooth sailing for Project Sirius, which encountered its biggest publicly confirmed setback in March 2023 , when CD Projekt said it had reassessed the original concept's scope and commercial potential , filed an impairment charge against earlier development spending, and began formulating a new framework for the project. Following that announcement, the project lost 29 employees (21 in the United States and 8 in Poland). A few months later, CDPR confirmed that a new framework had been put in place and that some of the previous work had been salvaged.

In 2024, CD Projekt said it planned to fully integrate The Molasses Flood's team into CD Projekt RED Inc to improve alignment between the studio and the wider organization, although CD Projekt acknowledged that the move would naturally bring changes to project leadership. The company stressed that Sirius itself was continuing.

At the end of July 2025, CD Projekt reported that 51 developers were working on Sirius. By late 2025, that figure had reportedly risen to approximately 56 developers , although those numbers referred to internal development staff and may not represent the entire project workforce. Earlier in 2025, the departing director teased that Sirius would be ' an amazing The Witcher multiplayer game '.

Today, Kotaku reports that there have been a few job cuts: nine employees working on Project Sirius lost their jobs , while another nine were reassigned to another project within CDPR. However, according to the report, the development has been going relatively well recently , following changes made earlier this year.

CDPR is predictably mostly focused on The Witcher 4 (and Songs of the Past, an upcoming DLC for The Witcher 3) these days, but successfully bringing a live service game to market would certainly be a great boon to the studio in terms of recurring revenue. Unfortunately, we still don't know how far the game is, so it's hard to make any predictions on when it might be unveiled.
