Gigabyte RTX 5090 owner adds custom mesh side panel to avoid bending 16-pin cable

A GeForce RTX 5090 owner went to unusual lengths to keep the card’s 16-pin power cable from bending against the case side panel. The user installed a mesh panel with an opening around the connector, giving the cable plenty of clearance. Months later, the connector still suffered heat damage.

Bilibili user was using a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5090 AORUS MASTER ICE with a Goghunters Fire F12 1200W White power supply. At first I thought that Fire was just a mistranslation, but this is indeed the correct name for this PSU.

According to the owner, the graphics card always operated at stock settings. Although the PSU was purchased around eight to nine months ago, the RTX 5090 had only accumulated around four to five months of actual use.

The mesh modification was specifically intended to avoid putting pressure on the 16-pin cable. The user says the cable was carefully routed without sharp bends or compression, yet the GPU power connector eventually began overheating. The damage was discovered before the connector completely failed, and the graphics card remained operational.

PSU maker did not make the RMA process easier

The owner blamed the Goghunters cable and criticized the company’s RMA response. Goghunters reportedly first asked whether the card had been overclocked and offered a replacement cable. The company later requested that the PSU be sent back for factory inspection, with the process expected to take around one month. The owner instead switched to a Seasonic 1600W PSU and added a fan blowing directly at the GPU power connector.

The RTX 5090 was eventually sent to a Bilibili repair technician, who replaced the damaged 16-pin header for 600 RMB, around $90. A phase-change thermal pad was also installed, reportedly reducing GPU hotspot temperature by 18°C.

And it looks like that even the mesh sidepanel is gone. But will this make this RTX 5090 owner safe?
