Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine on PS5 Runs at 60FPS with Ray Tracing Enabled, a Studio First at Launch

Insomniac Games has just revealed new details about Marvel's Wolverine in an interview with IGN . For example, the game will be the studio's first title to run at 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled even on the base PlayStation 5 console. Mike Fitzgerald , Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, stated:

We've always had these fidelity and performance modes, and then we always sort of last minute get the performance mode with ray tracing and like, ‘But this is pretty good…’ And so for this game from the start, we said, ‘You know what? We know we're confident we can ship this now. This is going to be a 60 frames per second game with ray tracing as the PS5 should have. We're going to build the game around this and towards this.’ And it's the default mode for the first time for us in one of our games. It’s important for the presentation.

Fitzgerald also noted the differences with Marvel's Spider-Man, which took place in a single city. Wolverine is more of a nature guy than Peter Parker, and the game takes place in the wilderness of Canada and in Madripoor (among other places), so the studio invested more in foliage and jungles, making them all reactive to wind and characters. Moreover, the destructive nature of the protagonist will be on full display in Marvel's Wolverine, with most props in the game destructible and reacting in physically accurate ways .

Beyond the tech news, Insomniac also confirmed a few of the features that should give the game decent replayability:

  • Mission Replay lets players return to a previous mission to collect missed collectibles
  • Whiskey bottles are said collectibles, augmenting Wolverine's progression
  • Material crates have the materials needed to unlock new suits
  • Nightmare Doors are unique trials that lore-wise are explained as "manifestations of the horrible things happening in Logan's mind".
  • Last but not least, the game offers New Game Plus at launch, unlike the Spider-Man games, which got it later
