Intel Razor Lake-AX resurrects cancelled Nova Lake-AX architecture, while Razor Lake-S jumps a full generation ahead

Intel's Razor Lake-AX and Razor Lake-S CPUs will feature different P-core and E-Core architectures to tackle different client segments.

Recently, there has been new information surrounding Intel's upcoming Razor Lake families. The AX family will target the "Halo" segment, combining lots of CPU cores with lots of GPU cores, while the standard lineups will aim at the desktop and mobile segments.

As per new details shared by Jaykihn on X, the Intel Razor Lake-AX lineup builds upon the Nova Lake-AX family , which was cancelled. The reason behind the cancellation of Nova Lake-AX was never disclosed, but it was going to feature the Coyote Cove P-Core and Arctic Wolf E-Core designs. Now, this same architectural configuration will be used by Razor Lake-AX , which further combines Xe3P iGPU cores.

The Intel Razor Lake-AX CPUs will compete against AMD's "Halo" lineup of SoCs, and are said to adopt on-package memory. Furthermore, the source states that these chips won't support any kind of overclocking, which isn't a big deal considering these are mostly going to aim at laptops and Mini PCs.

But there's more: Intel will also offer its standard client desktop and mobile lineups under the Razor Lake family. The difference between these "S" and "H" SKUs & the "AX" lineup is that the architecture will be a generation newer.

On Razor Lake-S and Razor Lake-H, Intel will leverage its latest Griffin Cove P-Core and Golden Eagle E-Core architectures. These will come with enhancements, optimizations, & upgrade over the Arrow Lake and Nova Lake architectures. The Razor Lake-S CPUs will feature overclocking support, so no need to worry about that feature being missing.

Currently, Intel Nova Lake-S CPUs are bringing up to 52 cores on LGA 1954 sockets . Certain Nova Lake SKUs will also feature the latest Xe3P iGPU cores . Razor Lake is expected to retain support on the LGA 1954 socket, but it is not known if the core configurations will be similar to Nova Lake or receive a boost.

Intel's Nova Lake CPUs are expected to launch early next year, so we can expect Razor Lake to hit shelves around 2028. For Razor Lake-AX, since Intel is reusing most of its canned Nova Lake-AX design, it can be pushed out faster too. We expect it to be released around late 2027 or early 2028.
