Sony reveals how Enhanced PSSR improves PS5 Pro upscaling

PS5 Pro Enhanced PSSR puts 90% of model parameters at 540p or below

At SIGGRAPH Daniel Craig, Principal Software Engineer at SIE has detailed the upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution model used by PS5 Pro. The new version comes from Sony and AMD’s Project Amethyst research, although the implementation remains custom for PlayStation hardware. It can also replace launch PSSR in existing games through a system-level override without requiring a game update.

One of the bigger architectural changes concerns where the neural network capacity is used. Sony says the launch Color Predicting Network had only around 30% of its parameters at the lowest 540p level. The new Kernel Predicting Network places around 90% of its parameters at 540p or below and does little work at 4K.

The upgraded model also stops predicting the final color directly. Instead, the KPN generates blend weights while conventional filtering handles the actual blend. This avoids storing and blending HDR color in 8-bit form and allows the network to spend less capacity on those operations.

Sony lists improved temporal stability, sharper detail, lower memory use and reduced GPU time among the changes. The company also says image quality improves across input resolutions, with larger gains at lower resolutions. Training time dropped from roughly four GPU months to less than one GPU week.

The SIGGRAPH presentation also confirms that the upgraded PSSR replaces the launch implementation rather than operating as a separate reconstruction mode. Existing PS5 Pro titles can use it through the system override, while games integrating the updated library directly can use the new implementation themselves.
