Chinese CXMT DDR5 memory hits two milestones, 9000 MT/s speed and 6000 CL28 timings

CXMT DDR5 reaches 9000 MT/s and 6000 CL28 as gap with established DRAM makers narrows

CXMT-based DDR5 has now reached two milestones within days of each other. Colorful demonstrated a 48GB iGame Shadow II kit using Chinese CXMT DRAM at 9000 MT/s, while separate testing from ASUS shows the same family of memory running at DDR5-6000 with CL30 and even CL28 timings. The results cover both ends of DDR5 tuning, maximum transfer rate and lower latency.

Colorful achieved the 9000 MT/s result with a 2x24GB iGame Shadow II kit on its two-DIMM iGame X870E VULCAN W OC motherboard paired with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D. According to Colorful, the configuration passed stability testing. This follows 8600 MT/s in July and 8800 MT/s earlier this month, when both 2x16GB and 2x24GB configurations passed testing.

CXMT is now improving timings as well

Frequency is only part of the story. Most CXMT-based DDR5-6000 kits currently available use timings around CL36, but Colorful’s 2x16GB iGame Shadow II kit can now operate at DDR5-6000 CL30 and even CL28 on recent Intel and AMD platforms . Colorful also says its CXMT-based memory has passed extended testing with an EXPO DDR5-6000 CL30 profile.

These results do not mean CXMT is already shipping retail DDR5-9000 or DDR5-6000 CL28 kits at scale. The 9000 MT/s result comes from an overclocking-focused two-DIMM motherboard, while CXMT itself currently lists DDR5 chips with official data rates of up to 8000 Mbps in 16Gb and 24Gb capacities.

Still, the progression has been fast. CXMT memory that we saw around 8000 to 8400 MT/s only weeks ago is now passing tests at 9000 MT/s, while tighter DDR5-6000 timings are being demonstrated at the same time.

Perhaps once the memory shortage is over, we will see actual competition not only among the established DRAM makers but also from Chinese manufacturers, which are apparently no longer far behind. One can hope, although current CXMT-based memory pricing is not much different from Samsung, SK hynix or Micron products. But let’s stay positive.
