The NVIDIA 12v-2×6 GPU power cable meltdown debacle seems to be something of a cat-and-mouse game, in which GPU board partners and PSU manufacturers keep trying to find workarounds and new safeguards against the GPU cables that have now claimed many a gaming GPU. ASUS's latest GPU Tweak III V2.1.8.0 update adds yet another feature to help save GPUs from potential temperature-induced premature failure.
The GPU Tweak III update adds support for auto-shutdown on GPU models with Power Detector+, which will shut down a system when "persistently high current is detected." ASUS has not shared what the exact parameters are for high current or how long the high current must be sustained before it triggers. Being limited to Power Detector+ GPUs means that auto-shutdown is limited to the ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090, ROG Astral LC GeForce RTX 5090, ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080, and ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs.
