Phantom Blade Zero Arms Soul with 55 Weapons, yet Iron Fists Remain Essential to Crack Heavily Shielded Foes

During the previously announced special Phantom Blade Zero State of Play broadcast, Chinese developer S-GAME has walked fans through the game's story, world design, combat systems, and difficulty options ahead of launch. The video features martial arts icon Donnie Yen , who served as creative consultant on the project and voiced/performed as Mo Yen , a formidable martial arts master appearing in the game.

Players take on the role of Soul , once the most feared blade of a martial order known as the Wulin's ruling faction. After being framed for his leader's murder, Soul is betrayed by former allies and, in a climactic duel against his childhood blood brother, is stabbed through the heart. A mysterious healer known as the Flesh Sculptor revives him, but under a fatal condition: Soul has exactly 66 days to live . Thus, the story follows his search for a cure, a hunt that drags him into a conspiracy and betrayal large enough to upend the entire Wulin (the martial underworld setting, home to righteous guardians, fallen warriors who've given in to darkness, and others bound by broken codes). According to the presentation, player choices throughout will fracture Soul's trajectory and reshape his fate .

Much of the story of Phantom Blade Zero unfolds in and around the town of Pengcheng , which becomes a hotbed of rival factions, hidden schemes, and deadly ambushes as word spreads of Soul's survival.

The game's visual identity is described as kung fu punk , describing a fusion of traditional Chinese kung fu aesthetics with steampunk machinery and body modification. The world is presented across eight hand-painted Chinese ink wash maps , seamlessly stitched together into a single explorable world, with waypoints enabling fast travel between previously discovered locations. Environments shown include a bandit-controlled valley, an abandoned warehouse strung with hanging puppets where some manner of dark ritual is taking place, a steam-powered iron tower built for equally sinister experiments, and a vast lake traversed via a high-speed vessel.

Structurally, the developers stressed that Phantom Blade Zero is neither an open world game nor a fully linear one . Instead, they described every area as individually handcrafted, filled with hidden enemies, side quests, rare treasures, and story-relevant clues to uncover through exploration.

Combat is very much the core pillar of the whole experience. S-GAME confirmed that Soul has access to a massive arsenal of 30 primary weapons and 25 secondary weapons , the latter referred to as Phantom Edges . A few specific examples were highlighted in the presentation:

  • Drunken Sword — builds up "drunken energy" that enhances Soul's evasiveness, with a swaying, staggering strike pattern.
  • White Serpent and Crimson Viper — a pair of twin blades that work in tandem; the longer White Serpent can be used to fling the shorter Crimson Viper outward for ranged attacks.
  • Soft Snake Sword — a flexible blade that coils around an opponent's guard and can slice through incoming thrown weapons mid-air.
  • Tiger Cannon — a heavy weapon capable of blasting apart distant enemy formations in a single shot, or detonating explosive enemies before they close the distance.
  • Heavier blunt weapons like iron fists and hammers are also necessary against shielded enemies, since bladed weapons alone reportedly aren't sufficient to break through heavy defenses, while area of effect fire weapons are shown clearing out swarms of enemies at once.

Beyond raw stats, upgrading a weapon unlocks new forms and techniques that meaningfully change how it plays. To avoid players feeling locked into underpowered early gear, the game includes a Reforging Talisman , which resets a weapon's level, refunds all materials invested into it, and lets players immediately reinvest those materials into new equipment.

The developers outlined three different difficulty options:

  • Wayfarer Mode — described as intuitive and cinematic, designed to let any player feel like a martial arts master regardless of skill level.
  • Hell Walker Mode — built around deeper, more precise fighting-game-style mechanics. Bosses in this mode don't rely on fixed attack patterns; instead, they react to the player's positioning, punish whiffed attacks, and adapt to individual habits in real time.
  • 66 Days Mode — the game's ultimate challenge mode, unlocked separately. It carries all the intensity of Hell Walker Mode, but turns Soul's in-fiction 66-day countdown into an actual gameplay timer: every defeat costs precious time, and if the clock reaches zero, it results in permanent death.

This Phantom Blade Zero presentation closed with a boss encounter showcase that demonstrated the "kung fu punk" combat style in motion, alongside a message from the development team thanking the community for its support throughout the project.

As a reminder, the developers also recently shared the game's PC system requirements . Phantom Blade Zero is set to launch on October 29 for PC and PlayStation 5.
