We're mere days away from the opening of Gamescom 2026 , which is shaping up to be the biggest edition in the event's history in many ways. Today, organizers Koelnmesse and game – The German Games Industry Association are confirming record numbers across exhibitors, indie participation, and international representation ahead of the show's opening.
As the week gets underway, the event already counts more than 1,600 exhibitors , with 70% coming from outside Germany. That's up from 1,568 exhibitors in 2025, though this year's figure spans 67 countries, down from 72 last year. Organizers have also confirmed 47 country pavilions representing 40 nations (up from 40 pavilions and 35 countries in 2025), with new additions from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Morocco, and Nigeria. The overall exhibition space totals 233,000 square meters , and for the first time in Gamescom's history, it is completely sold out .
Demand on the visitor side is similarly strong: wildcards and Saturday tickets for the show have already sold out ahead of the event itself. The Gamescom indie area is also seeing its biggest growth yet, now hosting more than 420 companies and hundreds of games, a 16% increase over last year's 364 companies. Organizers are positioning the indie area as a central showcase for games made outside traditional large-scale production pipelines.
Beyond the show floor, the week's programming will stream extensively online, including Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live (which airs on Tuesday, August 25 at 8 PM CEST ), the awesome indies showcase, the newly added charity speedrunning event Gamescom GDQ , and the Gamescom studio, which will broadcast live from the event floor throughout the week. Separately, the gamescom city festival extends the event into Cologne itself on August 29 and 30, featuring live performances from Thees Uhlmann & Band and The Notwist alongside other cultural programming.
On the trade side, Gamescom dev , the event's official developer conference, kicks off the week on August 24 and 25. This year's lineup includes keynotes from Tencent Games Business Development Director Amir Satvat and Subnautica 2 Creative Director Anthony Gallegos , alongside newly introduced dedicated tracks covering animation, level design, AI in gameplay, and AI in production. In total, the conference spans over 380 speakers across 230 sessions on 18 stages .
The Gamescom congress follows on August 27, bringing together figures from business, politics, science, education, media, and game development to discuss the broader societal role of games. Notably, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will open this year's congress, marking the first time a sitting German head of state has done so. Also on August 27, the Gamescom invest circle returns, connecting a curated selection of games and tech startups with international investors, publishers, and strategic partners.
