Battlefield 6 Update 1.4.2.0 Brings Top Gun Crossover, Returning Wake Island, and a Free Trial Week

Battlefield 6 is kicking off the next phase of Season 4 with its biggest update yet. Game Update 1.4.2.0 went live today, introducing a full Top Gun crossover event, the return of the classic Wake Island map, an expanded Tsuru Reef , two new fighter jets, and a free trial running through August 25 across all platforms.

The centerpiece of this update is a full-scale crossover with the movie franchise Top Gun , developed in partnership with Paramount Games Studio . It's described as Battlefield's most elaborate seasonal event to date, and it brings three familiar faces from 2022's film into the game, each voiced by their original film performers:

  • Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller)
  • Lt. Robert "Bob" Floyd (Lewis Pullman)
  • Adm. Solomon "Warlock" Bates (Charles Parnell)

The event also introduces CJTF Helix , a new squad unit inspired by the film's iconic characters, along with a wave of Top Gun-themed cosmetics and character skins. Players can earn these rewards through new Event Challenges using Ace Medals , a limited-time currency exclusive to the event. To coincide with the Top Gun launch, Battlefield 6 will be free to play for one week, from August 18 through August 25 , across all platforms. During the trial, players get access to six modes across four maps, including Tsuru Reef, the returning Wake Island, Cairo Bazaar, and Hagental Base.

EA clearly hopes the trial will give newcomers a chance to jump into the action alongside the Top Gun content before deciding whether to commit to a full purchase.

Two new two-seat fighter jets headline the aerial additions:

  • F/A-81F Super Spectre — built for aerial superiority and precision strikes, allowing pilots and co-pilots to coordinate attacks together.
  • F-74A Seacat — featuring variable-sweep wings that adjust mid-flight, offering a distinct blend of speed and maneuverability.

These aircraft take center stage in Top Gun: Carrier Strike , a reimagined version of the classic Carrier Assault mode. Infantry, naval, and aviation squads must work together to break enemy lines, defend their own carrier, and destroy the opposing one to secure victory.

Battlefield REDSEC also gets a new jets-only mode, Gauntlet: Fighter Sweep , where squads pilot the new aircraft in high-intensity dogfights, evading anti-air fire while trying to shoot down rival teams.

Wake Island , one of the franchise's most iconic maps, makes its comeback, bringing all-out combined-arms warfare to its distinctive Pacific island terrain. Players can expect coastal defense battles, C-4 demolitions against reinforced positions, and combat built around the map's offshore aircraft carrier.

Meanwhile, Tsuru Reef , already Battlefield 6's largest map, has been expanded with playable aircraft carriers. These vessels appear as part of the environment in Conquest and Escalation, while full carrier gameplay is reserved exclusively for Top Gun: Carrier Strike.

REDSEC's Battle Royale mode also adds the USS Grant , a new Crashed Carrier point of interest near Fort Lyndon . This downed aircraft carrier offers higher-value loot than standard drop zones and will be flagged as a High Value Zone for its first few weeks live.

Ground combat isn't being ignored either. The update introduces the Interdictor , described as the longest-range sniper rifle in Battlefield 6, designed for extreme-distance engagements, including picking off pilots inside aircraft cockpits. The Interdictor can be unlocked through the Battle Pass.

Beyond the headline additions, Update 1.4.2.0 delivers a substantial list of gameplay refinements. Jet handling receives a significant overhaul, including improved landing gear physics and a new Airplane Control Assist option that helps guide aircraft toward the center of the camera view while automatically managing pitch, roll, and yaw—a welcome addition for players still getting comfortable with aerial combat.

Underwater gameplay also received substantial polish, with new swimming animations, corrected drowning and revive interactions, and smoother transitions between above- and below-water states.

On the weapons side, several inconsistencies have been ironed out across the EF88, VSSM, and various optics, while Match Grade Ammo damage calculations against swimming soldiers have been corrected. A new ADS Dispersion Crosshair option has also been added, giving players a visual indicator of weapon bloom while aiming down sights—useful for learning how dispersion affects accuracy during sustained fire.

Portal receives a notable expansion, too, introducing Custom Lobbies for Battle Royale Quads and Conquest modes, aimed primarily at organized and competitive communities, alongside SDK support for both Tsuru Reef and Wake Island.

Between the Top Gun collaboration, the return of a fan-favorite map, new vehicles, and a free trial designed to pull in new players, Update 1.4.2.0 represents one of the most substantial content drops Battlefield 6 has received since launch. With Carrier Strike combining land, sea, and air combat into a single reimagined mode, EA and DICE appear to be leaning heavily into large-scale, vehicle-driven warfare as Season 4 continues.

Fans had been asking that for a long while . Even if the game was the best-selling title of 2025 , Battlefield 6 has steadily dropped players over time, and now they're hoping to win them back.
