Over the past few years, Square Enix brought back some niche RPGs that did not see release in North America and Europe back when they were released, such as Live A Live , which returned with a stunning HD-2D remake that allowed players all over the world to experience one of the publisher’s most unique games. Thankfully, it seems like the Japanese company isn’t just focusing on its big upcoming blockbusters such as Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Final Fantasy Resonance , as it may be about to bring back yet another beloved RPG that hasn’t seen a worldwide release on the SNES in collaboration with another publisher: Quintet’s Terranigma .
Clear River Games , a video game publisher focused on classic retro game revivals, posted a teaser for the Pixel Arcadia showcase happening on August 24 teasing the return of the final game developed by Quintet for the SNES following Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia . As if the line, which was spoken during chapter 4 of Terranigma , and the arranged version of "Prayer" didn’t give it away, the end of the teaser shows SQUARE ENIX/QUINTET/Kamui Fujiwara at the bottom, confirming this is indeed a teaser for the return of the classic action RPG which was never released officially in the US.
Unfortunately, the teaser doesn’t really indicate if Square Enix and Clear River Games are preparing a simple port of the original SNES game or an HD-2D remake/remaster, so it’s hard to predict how Terranigma will come back, and if it will be the only game to come back of what is commonly known as the Soul Blazer trilogy, considered one due to the shared themes between the three games, which include rebuilding a destroyed world, reincarnation, and the cycle of creation and destruction.
Personally, if bringing back only one game was the only option, I would have loved to see Illusion of Gaia back, as I love both its story and its gameplay based on Will assuming different forms as he explores a very intriguing rendition of the real world, but still, seeing Terranigma return in 2026 or 2027 was definitely not in my predictions.
