Seasonic 1600W PSU Becomes The First ATX Power Supply To Earn The 80 Plus Ruby Certification

Seasonic's new power supply reaches the highest efficiency tier in the 80 Plus program at 115W.

Reaching 80 Plus Ruby certification is a major milestone, and Seasonic just did it with its Prime Enterprise RX-1600 1600W power supply unit. The company has announced that this unit has become the first ATX power supply to reach 80 Plus Ruby certification at 115W, positioning it at the top when it comes to the highest efficiency tier.

The Prime Enterprise RX-1600 is designed for demanding desktop PCs, workstations, and AI systems where high power output and high efficiency are increasingly important. This achievement is particularly notable as the 80 Plus Ruby standard is designed to push efficiency beyond the levels required by previous certification tiers.

Sea Sonic has been involved with 80 Plus since the program's launch, so this result is significant for us,

Our first certified PC power supply appeared in 2005, followed by the first Gold certification in 2008.

The 80 Plus Ruby certification brings some of the toughest efficiency requirements. At 115, the power supply must achieve at least 85% efficiency at 5% load, 91% at 10% load, 93% at 20%, 95% at 50%, and 91% at full load, which is an impressive feat. It also must maintain a power factor of at least 0.95 at 20% load. Unlike other certification levels, the Ruby requires PSUs to deliver strong power efficiency even when the system is barely being utilized.

Reaching Ruby at 115 V reflects the continued focus on efficiency in our engineering work,

We are at a point where every additional percent of efficiency is difficult to achieve, but the effort is worthwhile because these small gains translate into enormous savings on a global scale.

- Walter Sun, CEO of Sea Sonic

Seasonic highlights that achieving the Ruby certification requires improvements across the entire PSU platform, including the switching control, thermal design, component selection, and validation. For consumers, the Prime Enterprise RX-1600 80 Plus Ruby might be an overkill upgrade, but for high-end workstations and AI systems that run for longer periods, every percentage point of efficiency can translate into less wasted energy and, hence, lower heat output.
