Following the game's release on PC , PlayStation 5 , and Xbox Series X|S , Pearl Abyss is working on a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Crimson Desert , which will show how much the system can handle the Blackspace Engine that makes it so different from games powered by Unreal Engine 5 , and a DLC expansion. Besides confirming last week that this DLC is planned for launch in 2026 , the Korean developer is keeping a tight lid on what the expansion will feature, but some users have discovered it could have some sort of maritime theme due to how recent updates are changing the game.
A new video shared on YouTube by NANGPLE highlights some of these changes mentioned above, which include blue seaweed appearing underwater, and white sandy terrain on coasts. However, the most interesting changes have been made outside the explorable map, including some changes to what the community calls South Island changes that seem to refine the location, and possibly get it ready for the upcoming expansion.
The latest Crimson Desert updates also made some other changes, such as improving the sea close to the northern desert, making underwater areas visible. The biggest addition of them all seems to be a mysterious submerged island located to the east of the map.
While a maritime theme for the upcoming Crimson Desert DLC expansion would be somewhat unexpected, it would pave the way for a lot of interesting gameplay mechanics that would further expand the experience. The first thing that came to mind was naval gameplay, which wouldn't be surprising if it took heavy inspiration from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and the Resynced remake , but things could be even more interesting, as Pearl Abyss has proven with their game that they are more than willing to take things in unexpected directions, such as introducing a pinball machine in a fantasy action-adventure game.
Regardless of what's next for Crimson Desert , I am definitely looking forward to the expansion and the promised story improvements which have yet to go live. At launch, I found the game to be incredibly engaging even with its issues, and I cannot wait to adventure into Pywel again to see whatever Pearl Abyss has cooked up next for its successful game.
