AMD gave its first detailed Zen performance preview in August 2016
© AMD AMD’s Zen architecture reached an important milestone almost exactly ten years ago. In August 2016, AMD held an event in San Francisco where it provided new architectural details and demonstrated Zen performance against an Intel Broadwell-E processor.
Summit Ridge takes on Broadwell-E
The August presentation focused on an 8-core and 16-thread Summit Ridge engineering sample. AMD clocked the processor at 3.0 GHz and compared it with an 8-core Intel Broadwell-E processor running at the same frequency.
AMD used Blender for the demonstration. The company showed the Zen engineering sample completing the rendering workload slightly faster than the Intel processor. This was one of the first indications of how competitive AMD expected its new CPU architecture to be after several years of relying on Bulldozer-derived designs.

AMD also demonstrated a 32-core and 64-thread Naples server processor during the event. Naples later became part of AMD’s first EPYC generation, while Summit Ridge reached desktops in March 2017 as the Ryzen 7 1800X, 1700X and 1700.
Zen was already announced in 2015
AMD first officially disclosed Zen on May 6, 2015. At the time, the company targeted a 40% increase in instructions per clock over its previous CPU architecture and confirmed features including simultaneous multithreading and a redesigned cache system.
This was not the first official announcement of Zen, however. AMD had already disclosed the architecture at its Financial Analyst Day in May 2015 and demonstrated Zen publicly at Computex 2016.

So this event was AMD’s first detailed performance preview of Zen and the first time the company directly compared its performance with Intel. A lot has changed in the CPU market since then, with AMD now competing with Intel across desktop, mobile and server processors.
This year’s Computex and the following Advancing AI event in July did not provide new information about Zen 6 for consumer platforms. AMD instead focused its Zen 6 announcements on EPYC and data-center products. One change we can clearly see is that Lisa Su has also taken a smaller role in dedicated consumer hardware presentations, which are now often led by other AMD executives.
