Upgrading to a gaming laptop in the age of the RAM crisis only makes sense if you have a ton of money to throw away or if you stumble upon a deal that’s too exceptional to turn a blind eye to. For one buyer, it was the latter, and when he found out that a Lenovo Legion Pro 5i armed with an RTX 4070 was available for only $600, he just had to pounce on the opportunity.
In addition to becoming the proud owner of a top-tier machine for only $600, Redditor “wtfa54” must also be glad that he managed to get a configuration with 32GB of DDR5 RAM and a 2TB SSD, preventing him from spending a ludicrous amount on either memory or storage upgrades. Either the previous owner didn’t realize that he was letting go of a potential goldmine, or he had already upgraded to a new gaming laptop and was willing to let the old one go at a throwaway price.
If there was one concern about the used Legion Pro 5i, it’s that the RTX 4070 is paired with an Intel Core i9-14900HX. Spending sufficient time on Reddit, and you’ll quickly realize that this CPU was the bane of gaming laptop owners because, apart from being a power guzzler, the Core i9-14900HX consumed ridiculous amounts of power and was designed to utilize more voltage, leading to premature degradation.

Even though Intel has admitted that this degradation doesn’t affect its 14th-generation notebook CPUs, there have been several instances where gaming laptop owners have shown proof that their machines were crashing, indicating that the problem was only going to worsen. Fortunately, even after running OCCT Gold stability tests overnight, the Legion Pro 5i’s processor showed no signs of instability.
However, we’ll recommend wtfa54 to apply some undervolting to the Core i9-14900HX using ThrottleStop because there’s no telling what sort of abuse this machine took prior to the purchase, so it’ll be a great idea to mitigate any potential problems that can break the experience down the road. As for the RTX 4070 GPU, it’s a decent graphics processor, offering support for NVIDIA’s DLSS and Frame Generation technologies.
Unfortunately, the only gripe is that it ships with 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM, which will become limiting in modern AAA titles when you try cranking up those visual settings. Other than that, wtfa54 must be absolutely thrilled about the purchase, and why wouldn’t he? It’s not every day that you score a gaming laptop for $600, and it comes with 32GB of DDR5 RAM paired with a 2TB SSD.
