PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix Chasing $1000 Price Risk Driving Away Six In Ten Buyers, Yet Options Are Limited

The PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix could be right around the corner if they indeed launch in late 2027 or early 2028 (although Sony has yet to decide its system's release date ), but what's usually considered a very exciting time is turning into a nightmare for both gamers and console manufacturers due to the high price of components. With prices being what they are, both systems launching at $1000 and above is a very real possibility, and one that could turn the next generation into one of the less popular of all time.

As reported by VGC , Ampere Analysis recently released a new report on the next-generation systems by Sony and Microsoft which highlights that, if the two manufacturers launch their traditional next-generation consoles in 2028 at the $1000 price mark, it would be catastrophic in terms of adoption. According to the report, the combined number of sold systems in 5 years could drop up to 38%. Factoring in a 12% drop for the market games and services compared to a $700 launch, a $1000 price point would have a significant impact on the industry.

Given how the situation is caused by factors outside of Sony and Microsoft control, Ampere Analysis provided some suggestions on how the two manufacturers could navigate these trying times. The first option would be to delay the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix beyond 2028 in the hopes that component prices will drop. However, Sony and Microsoft are hardly going to take this road due to a few reasons, including how delaying production would lead to a lot more issues that would make them lose even more money, such as Sony losing its already secured 3nm manufacturing allotment from TSMC for Q2 2027 , and thus delaying the new systems even further.

The second option suggested by Ampere Analysis is to stick to the scheduled release window, but reduce prices by using “heavier hardware subsidies, new monetisation models, more aggressive digital content strategies and optimised sales channels.” This is something that Sony itself hinted at in the past few months, which could lead to more price increases for services such as PlayStation Plus subscriptions, something that gamers wouldn't take well, considering how the company antagonized a good portion of its userbase with the decision to end game disc production in 2028 .

The third and final option is something that, interestingly enough, both Sony and Microsoft already factored in: innovate on “hardware form factor and use cases, placing less emphasis on graphical improvement .” As the PlayStation 6 home console is allegedly also launching alongside the company's first proper handheld (which shouldn't significantly limit the home system ), and the Xbox Project Helix is aiming to bridge the gap between console and PC gaming, the two system manufacturers thought ahead in some way.

However, amid the high prices that have driven up the cost of current-generation hardware, the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix couldn't have chosen a worse release window. And with what's likely going to be the longest cross-generation period of all time, both systems will have an even harder time convincing players to upgrade .
