Miyazaki Admits FromSoftware Always Just Dropped Players In, but Nintendo Is Refining The Duskbloods’ Onboarding

[ UPDATE - August 20, 11:42 AM ] The Duskbloods is not going to release on September 24, as Kirk McKeand, the journalist who penned the preview for The Guardian , confirmed on Bluesky that the release date was added by mistake.

Original story follows.

FromSoftware is among the best Japanese game development studios still active today, but it is undeniable that the uncompromising Hidetaka Miyazak i and his team have long struggled with player onboarding in games like the Dark Souls series and Bloodborne . Although things significantly improved with games like Elden Ring and its spinoff Nightreign , the Japanese studio still likes to just drop players into their games and let them figure everything out themselves.

Interestingly, improving the onboarding process was one of the reasons FromSoftware partnered with Nintendo on The Duskbloods , which may release as early as next month. A perfect match with a company that is well known for the extensive onboarding and tutorials in all of its games.

"In terms of the relationship currently and how we think it's going, up until this point – the systems and the overall ruleset of the game are very unique, and I think having someone who can constantly give us feedback, support, additional ideas, and the balancing first of all because these features are quite complex and difficult – having this relationship is definitely key to that," said Miyazaki -san to IGN . "Also with the complexity of the systems, the onboarding tutorials and making sure players understand how the game works and how to succeed in the game is something we've historically not been super great at conveying instantly. We've definitely just dropped players in and hoped they would figure it out. In this case, Nintendo is definitely the right partner for better conveying that information in a way that is understandable to the player; it definitely suits their strengths."

With Nintendo providing guidance for a proper player onboarding, FromSoftware is setting The Duskbloods to be a slightly more approachable title than most of its past titles, although it's clear from the first gameplay footage and previews based on the ongoing Closed Network Test that the game is not going to be any less complex, with a surprising focus on aerial combat I would have expected to see more out of studios like Team NINJA . However, as the final game is going to feature a lot of content that players will be able to tackle at their own pace, according to Miyazaki -san, The Duskbloods is looking more and more like a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch 2.

As for when players will be able to experience the game themselves, FromSoftware and Nintendo have yet to confirm an official release date for The Duskbloods . According to The Guardian , the game is set to release on September 24 , although media outlets that took part in the preview round were reportedly told not to reveal it , as it is still in flux.

Hopefully, another release date will be picked, as launching in late September would put it in direct competition with other heavy hitters like Silent Hill: Townfall and CONTROL Resonant .
