Linux has its own NVIDIA ShadowPlay inspired screen recorder, and it works on all major GPUs

GPU Screen Recorder 6.0 supports Linux recording on AMD, Intel and NVIDIA

GPU Screen Recorder is a Linux alternative to NVIDIA ShadowPlay, offering hardware-accelerated recording, streaming and instant replay. It supports AMD, Intel and NVIDIA GPUs on both X11 and Wayland, with most of the recording workload handled by the GPU to keep CPU usage low.

The software supports normal screen recording, live streaming and an instant replay mode. The latter continuously keeps the most recent recording period and saves it when requested, similar to ShadowPlay Instant Replay. Supported video codecs include H.264, HEVC, AV1, VP8 and VP9, although actual hardware encoding support depends on the GPU and driver.

There is also a dedicated GPU Screen Recorder UI, which provides a fullscreen overlay specifically designed in the style of ShadowPlay (I couldn’t tell if someone asked me which is Linux copy). The current package is version 1.13.5, while the recorder itself recently reached version 6.0.0. Both are available through Arch-based distributions, including CachyOS as shown in the screenshot.

Version 6.0.0 was released earlier this month. It added IPC support for the command-line recorder, improved replay-saving performance and introduced Apple GPU support under Asahi Linux through software encoding.
