AMD rumored to launch Radeon RX 6X50XT Navi 21/22 cards with 18Gbps memory in Q2 2022

AMD Radeon RX 6950XT, 6850XT, 6750XT is coming?

Another leaker appears to confirm Greymon55’s rumors about AMD’s potential plans for desktop Radeon RX 6000 series refresh.

Wjm47196 is a leaker who appeared on our site many times before with a relatively good track record. In his posts on Chiphell, he typically focuses on AMD’s upcoming hardware, with the latest entry being no exception.

According to him, AMD Radeon RX 6000 series refresh is real and confirmed. The company is set to launch 6X50XT models based on Navi 21 and Navi 22 GPUs, which might ‘replace’ existing models. It is reported that new cards might already launch in the second quarter, but no specific date is mentioned.

Radeon RX 6000XT refresh will primarily focus on memory upgrade by introducing 18 Gbps speed to more than just two SKUs. Such speed is now only available with Radeon RX 6900XT Liquid Edition and soon-to-be-released Radeon RX 6500XT. It is also worth mentioning that back in December, Samsung announced it is now sampling 20 Gbps and 24 Gbps modules. Those 18 Gbps chips might simply be downclocked Samsung 20 Gbps modules.

At the same time, one would wonder if AMD is ready to switch its production to 6nm (TSMC N6) process technology, compatible with the 7nm process AMD is already using for Navi 21/22/23 GPUs (TSMC N7). However, none of the leakers has thus far mentioned this being a possibility.

The upcoming 18 Gbps refresh might be a response to NVIDIA’s recent upgrades to its RTX 30 series, such as RTX 3080 12GB or the upcoming RTX 3090 Ti. The latter will be the first consumer card to feature 21 Gbps memory, while the 3080 now has higher memory bandwidth thanks to the 384-bit memory bus. Furthermore, AMD might also be preparing for the Intel Arc desktop launch, however, not many details are available at this moment about Intel’s DG2-512EU models that could potentially compete with AMD/NVIDIA cards.
