Intel's answer to DLSS is coming to games this summer

Intel has just revealed its ARC A-series of discrete graphics cards, launching the series to the laptop market first with its low-power ARC 3 series of products. This Summer, Intel plans to release higher performance ARC 5 and ARC 7 series mobile graphics chips, and their desktop counterparts.

One of the highlights of Intel's ARC A-series reveal event was their discussion on the company's XeSS AI Super Resolution technology, a solution that plans to supplant Nvidia's DLSS technology as the gaming market's top tier AI upsampling solution.

This summer, Intel plans to launch XeSS with 20 supported titles, including Shadow of the Tomb Raider, GRID Legends, Ghostwire: Toky0, Death Stranding: Directors Cut, Chorus, Hitman 3, and Enlisted.

Unlike Nvidia's DLSS technology, Intel's XeSS AI upscaling solution can operate using Intel's XMX instructions and generic DP4a instructions, allowing users of non-Intel graphics cards to take advantage of XeSS. This feature alone gives XeSS a critical advantage over DLSS, as XeSS supports a larger number of modern graphics cards.

At GDC 2022, Intel stated that its XeSS technology is superior to Temporal Upscaling solutions like AMD's planned FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 technology, pre-emptively throwing shade at AMD's second generation upscaling solution. Even so, Intel still hasn't launched XeSS to the public, which means that we cannot verify Intel's claims. Until XeSS supported games are launched, XeSS remains an unproven technology.

Moving forward, Intel plans to work with more game developers to add support for XeSS to their existing and future titles.
