The ESA has cancelled E3 2022's digital events, killing off E3 for another year

It's official, E3 2022 has been cancelled. The ESA has decided to cancel E3 2022's digital-only events, leaving 2022 without the Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3).

Back in January, the ESA cancelled E3 2022's physical events citing the "ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19". Now, the ESA has stated that they have decided to devote their resources to "revitalised" E3 digital and physical events in summer 2023. With E3 2023, the ESA promises to get the "industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience.

Recent reports have claimed that the ESA has failed to build up any momentum behind their plans to host an all-digital E3 event this year. Many publishers are likely planning to host independent game reveal events outside of E3, or opt to reveal their games at a more opportune time. Last month, EA confirmed that they would not be hosting their annual EA Play Live even this summer ( source ).
