New Microcode from AMD should unlock more performance from the company's Ryzen 7 5800X3D

Early gaming benchmark results for AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X3D ( Source ) have showcased impressive performance levels in gaming workloads, highlighting why AMD sees their 3D V-Cache technology as a solution that will regain for AMD the so-called "performance crown" in gaming workloads.

In response to a Tweet from CapFrameX , Yuri Bubliy ( @1usmus ), the creator of the Ryzen DRAM calculator, the Hydra overclocking utility, and ClockTuner for Ryzen (CTR), stated that AMD's upcoming AGESA 1207 microcode will "bring performance gains" to AMD's Ryzen 5800X3D processor.

Early testing for AMD's Ryzen 5800X3D used AMD's AGESA 1206B microcode, which suggests that upcoming BIOS releases with updated AMD microcode will deliver more impressive performance levels. That said, it is unknown how much this new microcode will increase the performance of AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

It is likely that AMD's new AGESA microcode will only deliver minor performance gains, and that these performance gains will be limited to specific workloads. The expanded L3 cache on AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X3D already offers users workloads-specific performance gains, and AMD's new AGESA code should not improve the Ryzen 7 5800X3D's performance in scenarios where AMD's V-Cache has no notable performance impact.

AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a processor that specifically targets gaming workloads, as the processor's enlarged L3 cache can only increase the performance of AMD's Zen 3 CPU cores in workloads that are memory/cache heavy. If a workload does not benefit from having more data on cache, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D will not offer gamers more performance than AMD's existing Ryzen 7 5800X.

AMD's AGESA 1207 AGESA microcode will be available within new BIOS releases for AM4 series motherboards later this month. Those who purchase AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor should make sure that their motherboards are updated to utilise the full potential of AMD's V-Cache enhanced processor.
