Japan, U.S. defense chiefs talk missile strategy in 1st meeting

WASHINGTON -- Japan's Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada met with U.S. counterpart Lloyd Austin for the first time here Wednesday to discuss missile deployments and other planning for a potential Taiwan crisis.

"We're going to discuss ways to further strengthen our defense cooperation, including our joint efforts to modernize a U.S.-Japan alliance and bolster integrated deterrence," Austin said in his opening remarks.
