AMD's RDNA 3 flagship is going to be huge

It looks like AMD's Radeon RX 7900 XT will feature seven chipets, 24GB of memory, and a maximum power draw of 450 watts

Igor Wallossek from Igor's Labs has released an "exclusive" look at AMD's Radeon RX 7900 XT PCB design, revealing giving us a look at what's likely to be AMD's RDNA 3 GPU flagship.

AMD did showcase an RDNA 3 graphics card running Lies of P at their recent Ryzen 7000 series reveal stream ( more information on that here ), but AMD did not reveal any concrete information about their next-generation graphics cards that we didn't already know. Thankfully, Igor's leaks have given us a lot to talk about, from the GPU's power configuration, to its VRAM capacity, memory bus size, and chiplet-based design.

Below, we can see that AMD's RDNA 3 GPU core uses seven chiplets, six smaller chiplets, which are expected to be memory controller chiplets, and a larger chiplet that is expected to be AMD's compute/graphics die.

Based on the VRAM chips and chiplet design shown below, AMD's RDNA 3 flagship is expected to feature a 24GB frame buffer that uses twelve 2GB (16Gb) GDDR6 modules over a 384-bit memory bus. This memory bus is divided over six chiplets, each of which controls two GDDR6 DRAM chips over a 64-bit memory bus.

Below we can also see that AMD's alleged RX 7900 XT design uses three 8-pin (6+2-pin) PCIe power connectors, giving this GPU a maximum power draw of 450W using these three connectors. AMD does not appear to be adopting the 12+4-pin (16-pin 12VHPWR ) PCIe 5.0 power connector with their standard RX 7900 XT models, though it is possible that some models will feature such a power connector.

The PCB image above suggests that AMD's RX 7900 XT will feature three DisplayPort outputs and a single HDMI 2.1 output. It looks like AMD is ditching USB Type-C display connectors with this release.

With RDNA 3, AMD has stated that they can deliver power efficiency (performance per watt) increases of over 50% when compared to RDNA 2. AMD's RDNA 3 GPUs will feature re-architected compute units, next-gen Infinity Cache, an optimised graphics pipeline, and enhanced ray tracing capabilities (more information here ). With all of this in mind, AMD's RDNA 3 graphics cards should represent a major step forward from AMD, which is great news for high-end consumers and the GPU market at large.
