Myanmar's army-backed party to replace chief with general's ally

BANGKOK -- Myanmar's military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party has decided to replace its leader with a loyalist to commander in chief Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, a source close to the party said Thursday.

At a Sept. 12 meeting of USDP executives, then-party chair Than Htay announced that he would hand over control to vice chair Khin Yi, citing medical treatment.
