Abe was 'instrumental' in forging economic ties with Canada: minister

NEW YORK -- Shinzo Abe was "instrumental" in forging strategic economic and commercial ties between Japan and Canada, seeing two countries with shared values, said Canadian industry minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, who will attend the former Japanese prime minister's funeral on Tuesday.

Abe saw Canada as "a country which shares the same values: democracy, stability, predictability, the rule of law," Champagne said in a telephone interview Sunday.
