Japan, China mark 50 years of diplomatic ties as tensions mount

TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Chinese President Xi Jinping will send congratulatory messages to a ceremony Thursday in Tokyo commemorating the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and Chinese Ambassador to Japan Kong Xuanyou are slated to attend the event, the organizers of which include Japan's powerful Keidanren business lobby.
