Twitter's Blue Tick verifications are getting revamped, and may become a paid for service

Days after his acquisition of Twitter, Elon Musk revealed that the company verification process is in the process of being "revamped", with new reports from The Verge alleging that it will become a paid for service.

Right now, Twitter's blue tick verifications are available for free to accounts that the platform has deemed as authentic. Twitter's blue tick signals that the source of tweets are from the users and companies that are verified, making their users less likely to be fooled by imitators and scammers.

According to The Verge, blue tick verification will soon become part of Twitter Blue, an optional Twitter service that is available for $4.99 per month. The Verge has alleged that Twitter Blue will soon cost $19.99 per month, and that currently verified users will need to become part of Twitter Blue to continue having their Blue checkmarks. At this time, it is unknown if Twitter Blue subscribers are guaranteed to receive verified status, or what other perks are being added to Twitter Blue. Verified Twitter users will reportedly have 90 days to subscriber to Twitter Blue.

Musk has been clear that he plans to tackle bots and fake users on the social media platform, and changing how the company verifies its users could be a major step towards Twitter's bot-free future.

If The Verge's report is true, Elon Musk plans to grow Twitter's subscriber revenue by forcing its verified users to say a subscription fee to maintain their blue checkmark status. This will be a small price to pay for many of Twitter's corporate userbase, but the almost $240 per year fee will cause many individual verified users to lose their checkmarks. Twitter's new Blue service appears to be a tax on Twitter's most popular users, and on companies that use the platform extensively.

Will the Blue "Verified" Checkmark become meaningless?

At this time, it is unknown how Twitter's "Verified" checkmark will be given to users following Musk's planned verification revamp. Hopefully, it will not become a checkmark that is automatically given to all premium Twitter Blue users, as that would make the checkmark open for abuse and devalue the symbol's status. Perhaps Twitter's more costly version of Twitter Blue will only be available to verified users, or the service will come with some form of verification process. Either way, Musk's alleged verification revamp is a tax on Twitter trustworthiness.
