Red Hat engineer Jan Grulich has written a year-end summary about the ongoing work for supporting Wayland-based screen sharing for the Google Chrome/Chromium web browser. The code still isn't enabled by default but given the strides being made that could change "sooner than later" if all goes well.

Grulich's year-end summary covers stream restoration support in WebRTC, testing work that is being done for PipeWire's streaming code to evaluate changes moving forward, UX improvements within the Chromium preview dialog, and more.

Grulich also noted that with Firefox 106, Mozilla did re-base their WebRTC code against what is found in Chromium 103 but sadly they haven't yet pulled in the new screen sharing portion of the code. Firefox is still battling dependency issues there but hopefully they too will be seeing nice screen sharing support on Wayland like Chrome/Chromium.

Looking ahead to the new year, Grulich is looking at extending PipeWire's test coverage, using the portal dialog as the default one, and fixing more bugs around all of this new code.
