While the Linux 6.1 stable kernel isn't even being released until later today, there already have been a number of feature pull requests submitted for the upcoming Linux 6.2 kernel cycle. Due to the merge window being the two weeks leading up to Christmas, those with generous holiday/vacation time have been sending in their pull requests in advance. One of those early pull requests is all of the sound subsystem updates.

Sound subsystem maintainer Takashi Iwai of SUSE sent in the sound updates for the Linux 6.2 kernel merge window. He characterized the changes this cycle as "relatively calm" but with the usual smothering of device-specific driver changes.

When it comes to the hardware driver work, Takashi summied up as: " Support for Allwinner D1, a range of AMD and Intel systems, Mediatek systems with multiple DMICs, Nuvoton NAU8318, NXP fsl_rpmsg and i.MX93, Qualcomm AudioReach Enable, MFC and SAL, RealTek RT1318 and Rockchip RK3588. "

The Intel sound work for the next version of the kernel includes continued overhauling of the Intel DSP code, quirks and other fixes to the Intel AVS code for older Intel platforms, and the continued stellar work around Sound Open Firmware (SOF) support.

On the AMD side is also work on their growing Sound Open Firmware presence, quirks, updating the Pink Sardine platform audio co-processor register header, and various fixes.

The support for the RealTek RT1318 is another sound change worth calling out.
