AMD Radeon 780M tested

Chinese tech outlet “Golden Pig Upgrade” shares first performance figures of AMD RDNA3 integrated GPU.

The final driver for integrated RDNA3 graphics is probably still a few weeks away. However, some preliminary results have now been shared on Bilibili platform featuring AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS processor, codenamed Phoenix.

This processor features AMD latest architectures such as 8-core Zen4 CPU and RDNA3 for graphics. Obviously, the focus is currently on the graphics as no CPU compute benchmarks were shared at this point (except for TimeSpy’s built-in CPU score).

The leaker provided two results, both on the same platform with DDR5-5600 memory. The first one had power uncapped to 54W, while the other was limited to 25W. As shown below, despite halving the power, performance certainly hasn’t dropped that much:

Integrated AMD RDNA3 GPU called Radeon 780M features 12 Compute Units clocked up to 3.0 GHz. According to the screenshots, it looks like the GPU boosted up to 2.8 GHz. Such configuration rendered 2486 graphics points in 3DMark TimeSpy at 25W and 2791 points at 54W.

Compared to Radeon 680M (RDNA2 iGPU) available with Rembrandt APUs, the processor is at 8% to 22% faster than Radeon 680M depending on a configuration. There are of course different implementations of 680M in 6000U or 6000HX series, but the Phoenix APU tested is also part of the HS series. AMD has not yet confirmed when Ryzen 7000 APUs will launch exactly, but the company promised that first “Phoenix” laptops should hit the shelves in March this year.
