Japan says balloon like U.S. one spotted in Kyushu in 2022

TOKYO -- The Japanese government confirmed on Thursday that a balloon similar to the Chinese spy balloon that flew over the U.S. last week was spotted in the western Kyushu region in January last year.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said on Thursday at a press conference that a balloon of unknown origin was spotted over the high seas west of Kyushu in January 2022. He said the balloon resembled a Chinese reconnaissance device.
