AMD adds Navi 23 support to Linux OpenGL driver

AMD today added a new GPU codename to its Linux OpenGL driver stack (Mesa 20.03-devel). The GPU called ‘Dimgrey Cavefish’ has the same GPU architecture level as Navi 21 and Navi 22. The new Dimgrey is more than likely the codename of Navi 23.

The codename can be easily associated with Navi 23 because AMD has already provided the same hexadecimal ranges within other files (0x3C to 0x46).

All three RDNA2 discrete GPUs are being added to Linux ‘almost’ at the same time. The Sienna Cichlid aka Navi 21 is likely to be the first, but Navi 22 and Navi 23 are to follow shortly. The good news is that we should expect a much wider range of graphics processors than before. AMD has not launched three discrete GPUs in the same year for a very long time.

Would that mean AMD is launching high-end to entry-level series under Radeon RX 6000 series in October? Probably not, because Navi 23 has been added three months after Navi 21. However, it does confirm that AMD is committed to launching more graphics cards under the next Radeon series.
