AMD reportedly working on 2nm Zen6 microarchitecture codenamed “Morpheus”

AMD Morpheus, the Zen6 core design in 2nm is active development

Future Zen core designs have been given a name by an AMD engineer.

What has now been removed from the web is a snippet from a LinkedIn profile of one of the AMD engineers working on Zen architecture. The engineer also revealed the names of the microarchitecture for Zen5 and Zen6 cores and confirmed what process nodes they are targeted for.

The primary work for this person was power management projects for Zen4, Zen5 and Zen5 architecture. The Zen4 architecture codenamed “Persephone” has already been deployed in the data center and consumer markets, but it is still some time before we see a product based on the Zen5 core designed codenamed “Nirvana”. However, it will take even more time before AMD launches the processors based on Zen6 architecture codenamed “Morpheus”.

According to this leak, the Zen5 core would be manufactured using 2nm process node. The work on the power management project for Zen6 core had started this year in January, but it would appear that it has not yet ended.

  • AMD Zen 2 (7nm) – Valhalla
  • AMD Zen 3 (7nm) – Cerberus
  • AMD Zen 4 (5nm) – Persephone
  • AMD Zen 5 (3nm) – Nirvana
  • AMD Zen 6 (2nm) Morpehus

AMD Zen roadmap has been recently shown, but the company but did not share any plans for Zen6 yet. The Zen5, which is still roughly a year away, will see at least three variants: Zen5, Zen5X3D and Zen5c. Given the rumors about the next-gen “Strix Point” APU featuring a hybrid design Zen5/Zen4c, the Zen5c could just as well be paired with Zen6 for future APU designs somewhere in the next two years.
