The only Radeon RX 5600 XT with 12GB memory
The mod was performed by (as might have guessed) Paulo Gomes team. They reached out to us to tell us about another project they have been working on, which is a customized Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card.
Thus far, the popular mods that made the headlines were on GeForce RTX cards, but as it turns out Radeon GPUs can be tricked to support more frame buffer as well.
The Radeon RX 5600 XT is not a new card anymore. This midrange GPU was introduced in early 2020 with Navi 10 XLE CPU and 6GB memory across 192-bit memory bus. The card was only offered in this configuration, but it was enough for board partners to develop over 60 custom variants (which is a lot for Radeon cards).
Among them was PowerColor’s Red Dragon GPU which was launched with different specs than it had been announced with. The final product featured a 1750 MHz memory clock instead of 1500 MHz. As some of you might remember, this was a result of AMD’s last-minute change of specs from 12 Gbps to 14 Gbps bandwidth.

The Red Dragon was chosen by Paulo Gomes team for the next project, an effort to double the frame buffer for this GPU. They replaced the 1GB Samsung GDDR6 14 Gbps memory modules with 2GB 16 Gbps chips. Naturally, this meant that the card had to be downclocked back to original specs for testing, but nothing should prevent higher clocks in daily use, as they claim.
This mod has not been possible before simply because there was no BIOS for RX 5600XT that supports 12GB memory. Luckily, the team found a way to modify the BIOS with some undisclosed HEX changes:

According to the video, the mod was successful after previous failed attempts. The card is correctly recognized by Windows and supports official drivers. This means that the team can be tested with games and benchmarking software which was done. Just bear in mind, this is not a standard preset, but a 10K resolution, which should explain why the performance now twice as high.
