Meta's getting ready to challenge Twitter - Instagram Threads is launching this week
Twitter is about to receive some major competition in the form of Instagram Threads, a new social media platform from Meta, the company behind Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Threads is due to launch on July 6th, with the platform's website stating that the platform will go live around 3PM BST.
Thanks to the many controversial changes that have been made to Twitter under Elon Musk's leadership, the company has created a great opportunity for a competitor to rise up and challenge Twitter's position within the social media landscape. With the backing of Meta, Threads has a chance to become a true competitor to Twitter, something that should worry Twitter's leadership.
In recent days, Twitter has limited the number of Tweets that users can view (supposedly temporarily), blocked Tweets from being viewed by unregistered users, and have confirmed that TweetDeck will become a premium Twitter Blue feature. These changes have forced many Twitter user to seek an alternative app, and Meta's ready to capitalise on this with Threads.
Like Meta's other social media platforms, Threads is expected to collect a lot of data from its users, an aspect of the app that will concern some users. On top of that, the app's connection to Meta/Facebook will also be concerning for many Twitter users. For users with these concerns, other Twitter alternatives exist like Mastodon and BlueSky.
