The upcoming Microsoft Xbox Series X/S along with the Sony PlayStation 5 are both set to feature custom APU's from AMD featuring Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures. AMD has recently showcased the power of RDNA 2 with the announcement of the RX 6800, 6800 XT, and 6900 XT graphics cards which compare favourably to the latest high-end offerings from NVIDIA. AMD announced several new features enabled by the RDNA 2 architecture including hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing, Mesh Shaders, Sampler Feedback and Variable Rate Shading.
Microsoft has announced that the Xbox Series X/S will be the only next-generation consoles to fully support all of these new features. Microsoft plans to fully support all of these additions across Xbox and PC providing a common set of features that developers can rely on when developing their games. This announcement from Microsoft implies that the PlayStation 5 will lack some of the aforementioned RDNA 2 features, what specific features these are or what effect they will have on performance and gameplay is currently unknown.
