TOKYO -- Japan's Ministry of Defense has raised its profit margin assumptions for companies from which it procures equipment to 15%.

The ministry introduced a system of assessing company efforts to improve quality and shorten delivery times. The previous profit margin assumptions were only about 8%, which led some to withdraw from defense-related production.
